Penny lab - why is it incorrect to describe the process as dissolving?

A penny made of 96% zinc and 4% copper is dropped into a beaker of hydrochloric acid. After 24 hours, the zinc is completely gone, the penny is hollow, and only two thin plates of copper remain. Why is it incorrect to say that the zinc dissolved? What did the acid really do to the zinc?
