Why would any sane person worship Satan?

I'm an Atheist also and I believe people use the term 'satan worshipping' as a way of justifying (in their minds) horrific crimes. It probably has little to do with religion and spirituality. It removes responsibility and makes them less culpable if they truly believe in their twisted brains 'they've been 'told' to do it.
